Last week, I did a one day job remodeling a fireplace face in San Diego. The customer was looking for an updated look from the old brick they originally had. I recommended using an El Dorado Stone, and they chose Santa Cruz Coastal Ledge.

The first thing I did was remove the old brick from the hearth. Many of them were loose, so it was an easy demo.

Then I replaced the brick with 20″x20″ El Dorado Hearthstones, smoke color. I also applied a scratch coat of mortar to the existing brick on the face to help the new stone adhere properly.

I then applied the new stone with a modified thinset mortar.

The owners were very happy with their new fireplace! Many people don't realize that they can change their fireplace quickly and affordably.
